A sign of land changed probability; it did not provide bearing and distance

Ocean navigators did not wait for a mountain to rise above the horizon before thinking about land. Seabirds, floating vegetation, timber, smoke, terrestrial insects, unusual cloud, water colour, swell and bottom material could all alter confidence that a coast lay nearby. Such observations came from accumulated route experience, not from one universal code that worked in every sea.

Each clue had alternatives. Weed could travel far from where it grew, some birds remained oceanic, a fixed-looking cloud might belong to a weather system, and discoloured water could form an offshore river plume. A clue could revise a judgment but could not plot a fix by itself. The useful question was whether several genuinely independent observations converged at the same time.

In 1773 weed and diving birds suggested land to Cook but gave him no direction

On the evening of 1 February 1773, Adventure's captain Tobias Furneaux approached Resolution and reported a large float of sea or rock weed with several birds called divers around it. Cook recorded these as signs of land nearby, then immediately admitted that they could not know whether it lay east or west. The source preserves both the judgment and its limit.

That sequence resists the easy story that sailors could simply follow birds to an island. Furneaux was the observer and Cook the recorder; the passage confirms neither a sighting of land nor a flight direction to pursue. The ships still had to combine estimated latitude and longitude, wind and persistent swell when redesigning their search. The clue changed a decision without completing the navigation.

Birds and drift became useful only with species, behaviour, weather and current

A bird that bred ashore and returned at dusk offered different evidence from one that foraged over the open ocean for long periods. One accidental visitor differed from repeated groups on a stable flight line. Vernacular names in a historical log may not identify a modern species securely, so they cannot support a fixed foraging radius. Number, direction, nesting material and change through the day all mattered.

Weed, seeds, branches and worked debris showed some connection to land or shallow water, but wind and current still moved them. Freshness, attached organisms, convergence lines and drift direction could sharpen an inference while leaving the source far upstream. Combining birds with weed did not cancel uncertainty. Their force grew only when swell, cloud, scent, soundings and the reckoned position agreed.

Repeated depths and bottom samples turned biological hints into a recorded profile

A lead gave more than a number. Tallow in its hollow base could return sand, mud, shell or gravel for comparison with chart and sailing directions. A sequence becoming steadily shallower with the expected bottom suggested an approach to a shelf or channel. A steep volcanic island, deep-water coast or poorly charted shore might supply little warning until the vessel was close.

On 19 April 1770, Endeavour's journal combined the Australian southeast coast entering the ship's view with an estimated range, eighty fathoms and fine sandy bottom, then recorded the turn alongshore. Eighty fathoms did not inherently mean landfall; the entry shows sight, bearing, depth and position becoming one observation. Its European language of discovery must also be distinguished from the much older presence and knowledge of Indigenous peoples.

When signs multiplied, good seamanship enlarged the safety margin and tested the next observation

A watch expecting land could strengthen bow and masthead lookouts, shorten sounding and log intervals, reduce sail, ready an anchor or keep an offing through darkness. Dead reckoning marked the expected coast, charts and directions supplied sequences of depth and landform, and dawn, a celestial sight or a new bearing tested the hypothesis. Each step prevented one mistaken clue from becoming an immediate grounding.

Turning straight toward a flock or cloud promoted uncertain evidence into an untested route. A defensible log identified observer, time, relative bearing, persistence, wind and current, then compared the outcome. Failure to find land was evidence too: it helped reveal which signs were unreliable in that particular sea.

Did sailors really follow birds to find land?

They used the number, direction and daily behaviour of some birds as evidence, but not every seabird was coastal. Species, season, weather and foraging range had to be checked against other clues.

Does floating seaweed prove that land is close?

No. Rock weed or fresh terrestrial debris may raise the likelihood, but wind and current can carry it far and it does not reveal which side the land lies on.

Why can clouds indicate an island beyond the horizon?

High land can influence local cloud, so a persistent cap or band may appear before the coast. Weather systems create similar clouds, making it a clue to watch rather than proof.

Could soundings warn a ship before every coast?

No. A broad shelf may provide a gradual depth sequence, while a steep island or deep coast may change very late. Depth also needs bottom, tide, chart and draught context.

How was a suspected coast finally identified without GPS?

Navigators matched dead reckoning, celestial observations, depth and bottom with distinctive capes, peaks and sailing directions, then took more bearings alongshore. One sign was not enough.
